Months of blood, sweat, tears, and obscenely large cell phone bills all led one place: the LG U.S. National Text-Messaging Championship. When the dust settled on the 21 finalists, the one left standing was a 15-year-old girl from Iowa who has been texting for all of eight months.
Iowa teen, Kate Moore, won the national title by coming from behind in the best-two-of-three final. She picked up the title by beating a 14-year-old girl in a race to be the first to write the following line error-free: “Zippity Dooo Dahh Zippity Ayy…MY oh MY, what a wonderful day! Plenty of sunshine Comin’ my way….Zippitty Do Dah Zippity Aay! WondeRful Feeling Wonderful day!”
Over the five rounds of the competition, contestants had to text blindfolded, while being heckled, and while running on a treadmill and jumping obstacles. They were also quizzed on texting acronyms. The only acronym I can think of off-hand is TLA (three-letter acronym).
For the winner’s parents, I’m sure the $50,000 prize is a welcome reward for having to pay for eight months worth of massive cell phone bills. I hope they’re making their daughter pay her bills from now on. Moore told CNN that she sends about 500 texts per day. Unfortunately for her phone company, Moore is on an unlimited plan.
